Challenge

How might we teach children proper recycling techniques to reduce individuals' carbon footprints?

Solution

Games are an engaging way for children to learn. Turning proper recycling into a game should increase children's interest in learning and help them retain the information so they can use it in the future.

Concepts

  1. Shopping list board game

In this Monopoly-style game, players roll dice, choose sustainable 3D-printed groceries with RFID sensors, and complete their shopping lists. The player with the highest sustainability points when the first one finishes wins, accompanied by engaging scanning sounds.

  1. How to recycle game

This game teaches kids about recycling. Play solo or with a partner, sharing a bag of 3D-printed items like bottles and boxes. Place each item in the right recycling bin, where scanners, lights, and an OLED screen provide feedback and keep score.

  1. Memory/Simon says game

This kids' toy boosts recognition and memory by flashing lights on a board. The child matches the sequence by pressing corresponding buttons, with increasing difficulty. LED lights and sounds provide feedback, making the button press the input.

  1. Alphabet with block letters and sounds

For young children learning the alphabet, this toy features a board with uppercase and lowercase letters. Pressure sensors trigger a speaker when a letter is removed, pronouncing it. If misplaced, the speaker guides the child to try again. Input is through pressure sensors, and the speaker provides output.

  1. Math problem game

This multiplayer math practice game, inspired by Jeopardy, involves an iPad displaying math problems. Players hit buttons to input answers on their digital screens. Correct answers earn points based on difficulty, while incorrect ones allow others to steal points with the right answer. The system confirms the answer's correctness as output.

Final Choice

We chose concept #2 because it had great potential and focused on a subject my partner and I were both passionate about.
